The pest pierces the leaf epidermis and sucks out the sap, causing the appearance of silvery spots and streaks. In cases of severe infestation, the leaves turn yellow, curl, and wither, which reduces photosynthesis and leads to underdevelopment of the bulbs. In storage, sticky secretions and punctures are found on the succulent scales, which serve as entry points for secondary fungal infections.
Pest populations are characterized by variability in insecticide resistance levels and fecundity when transitioning from other host crops to onions. Specific resistance genes in onions to this thrips species have not been described; therefore, breeding is conducted through selection based on phenotypic traits using field evaluations of tolerance and the degree of plant infestation.
