In soybean crops, the most frequently encountered species are Neohydatothrips variabilis, Thrips tabaci, Frankliniella occidentalis, Frankliniella tritici, and Kakothrips robustus. The pests feed on plant sap, causing the appearance of silvery or bronze spots, necrosis, and leaf curling. Damage to flowers and ovaries leads to the shedding of reproductive organs and the formation of underdeveloped seeds.
In addition to direct mechanical damage, thrips act as vectors for the Soybean vein necrosis virus (SVNV). At present, specific resistance genes in soybean to these pests have not been described, and breeding efforts for this trait are not standard in variety development.
