The duration of the shallot vegetation period is shorter than that of bulb onions; when planted in spring, it ranges from 55–65 days for early-maturing varieties, 65–70 days for mid-season varieties, and 70–75 days for late-maturing varieties. In broad commercial and research conditions, the overall range varies from 68 to 98 days.

When propagating mother bulbs from seeds, the cycle extends to 118–142 days. The vegetation period is considered a stable characteristic; however, it can be shortened by using larger planting material, as well as by switching to autumn planting, which accelerates bulb maturation by 12–15 days compared to spring planting.
