Verticillium wilt of rapeseed

Brassica napus L.

A disease caused by the specialized fungus Verticillium longisporum, characterized by latent development and symptom manifestation during the ripening phase as dark longitudinal stripes on the stems.

In the reference 45 varieties crop Rapeseed, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causal agent is the highly specialized pathogen Verticillium longisporum, which primarily infects plants of the genus Brassica. Unlike other Verticillium species, this fungus rarely causes loss of turgor and typical wilting in rapeseed, preferring to develop latently until the final stages of vegetation.

External symptoms of infection become visible after the onset of ripening (BBCH 80+) and appear as dark longitudinal stripes on the stem epidermis. Beneath these, black microsclerotia are found, while the inner part of the stem and the roots turn black and shrivel due to necrosis of the vascular tissues.

Breeding rapeseed for resistance to this disease is complicated by the absence of identified major genes (R-genes). Work is directed toward the accumulation of quantitative resistance; therefore, under field conditions, varieties are characterized not by immunity, but by varying degrees of tolerance or resistance.
