Verticillium wilt of tomato

Solanum lycopersicum L.

An economically significant vascular disease of tomato caused by the fungi Verticillium dahliae and V. albo-atrum. It is characterized by impaired water metabolism, specific V-shaped chlorosis of the leaves, and browning of the xylem.

The disease affects the plant's vascular system, causing a loss of turgor that does not recover during night hours. Large chlorotic spots, often V-shaped, appear on the lower leaves, gradually leading to necrosis and desiccation. Cross-sections of the stem or petiole reveal characteristic greenish-brown discoloration of the affected vessels, which leads to reduced productivity and premature ripening of small fruits.

The pathogenesis of Verticillium dahliae on tomato involves three races. Resistance to race 1 is controlled by the Ve locus, which contains the receptor genes Ve1 and Ve2, with Ve1 specifically providing functional protection. Races 2 and 3 are capable of infecting varieties possessing this gene, making the search for new sources of resistance, particularly among wild Solanum chilense species, a priority for breeding.
