Helianthus annuus L.

The branching trait in sunflowers is classified by two key parameters: the location of branching on the main stem, which can be basal, apical, or continuous, and the type of lateral shoots, which vary from weak and short to vigorous. The combination of these characteristics allows for the identification of up to nine branching types, the inheritance of which can be determined by either dominant or recessive genes.

In commercial production, single-headed forms are preferred, as branching complicates mechanized harvesting and reduces the uniformity of seed ripening. However, in breeding programs, branching forms are actively used as paternal components of hybrids because they possess a longer flowering period and increased pollen productivity.
