The methodology for determining sugar beet germination is based on laboratory germination of samples, where germination energy is recorded on the 4th day, and final germination on the 10th day. Fruits or seed clusters that have produced at least one seedling without defects in the root system or cotyledons are considered normally germinated.
For high-quality seed material, a germination rate above 90% is considered the target benchmark. Laboratory values are used to calculate the seeding rate, although field germination is almost always 10–15% or more lower than laboratory germination due to the influence of soil moisture, temperature, and the presence of soil crust.
