Rapeseed germination

Brassica napus L.

A key quality indicator for rapeseed planting material that determines the seeding rate and target plant population density. Laboratory germination testing takes 7 days under standard temperature conditions.

In the reference 4 varieties crop Rapeseed, where this is mentioned in the description.

For winter rapeseed, the standard laboratory germination rate is set at no less than 90% for breeder and elite seeds, and at least 85% for certified seeds. For spring rapeseed, the minimum acceptable indicators are 85% for breeder and elite seeds and 80% for certified seeds.

Field germination of rapeseed is always lower than laboratory germination and depends on the seeding depth, which is optimally 1.2–3 cm, as well as on soil moisture and the quality of seedbed preparation. A critical reduction in plant stand density, which may necessitate reseeding, is defined at a density of less than 12 plants per square meter.
