Sunflower germination

An indicator of seed sowing quality that determines their suitability for planting and the calculation of seeding rates. It is expressed as a percentage, representing the ratio of normally germinated seeds to the total number of seeds in a sample.

To determine sunflower seed germination in the laboratory, a sample of 400 seeds, divided into four replicates, is used. During analysis, a double achene is considered as a single seed, and to overcome seed dormancy, seeds are pre-heated at a temperature of 30°C for 10 days. When planting on a substrate, seeds are placed with the sharp end facing downward and kept for 7 days at a temperature of +20…+25°C and a humidity of 70–75%.

Regulatory requirements for germination depend on the seed class: for class 1, this indicator must be at least 95%, while for class 2, a value of 85–90% is often acceptable. Laboratory germination is a basic parameter for adjusting the seeding rate required to compensate for losses and achieve the target plant population density under field conditions.
