Variety traits

Uniformity — Onion

Allium cepa L.

A complex economic trait reflecting the homogeneity of bulbs in terms of mass, diameter, shape, and maturity. High uniformity is critical for mechanized harvesting, standardization of commercial produce, and ensuring storage quality.

In the reference 20 varieties crop Onion, where this is mentioned in the description.

In breeding and variety testing, uniformity is assessed through morphometric measurements of polar and equatorial diameters, mass, and shape index. Statistical methods are used for quantitative evaluation, where low coefficients of variation indicate high batch homogeneity.

Uniformity of maturity, expressed by simultaneous leaf fall, is a key component of the trait. With poor uniformity, more than 25% of plants may lag in development, hindering mechanized harvesting. Furthermore, uneven maturity levels of bulbs in a single batch reduce storage life and promote the development of rot foci during storage.

Achieving target uniformity metrics depends on the genetic potential of the variety or heterotic hybrid, as well as agricultural practices. The most important factors are seeding precision, nutrient management, and uniform irrigation, which ensures stable soil moisture to prevent the formation of substandard double bulbs.
