Variety traits

Plant height — Savoy cabbage

Brassica oleracea L. (Savoy Cabbage Group)

A trait used in variety testing according to UPOV and CPVO guidelines, which determines the dimensions of the rosette to select planting density and evaluate the suitability of the variety for mechanical harvesting.

In the reference 12 varieties crop Savoy cabbage, where this is mentioned in the description.

To assess the plant height of Savoy cabbage, gradations from very low to very high are applied. In professional variety testing, this quantitative indicator allows for the classification of varieties: for example, low varieties include Fitis and Vorbote 2, medium ones include Marner Grünkopf, and high ones include Hammer and Roi de l’hiver 2.

In practice, the height of varieties ranges from 30 to 50 cm, although extreme values may span from 15 to 70 cm. The trait determines the required growing space and planting pattern, while compact varieties with a short stalk demonstrate better resistance to lodging and suitability for mechanization.

Height also serves as an indicator when assessing seedling quality, which should reach at least 15 cm by the time of transplanting. The level of nitrogen nutrition has a direct impact on this parameter, as excess nitrogen provokes excessive vegetative mass accumulation.
