Fusarium Wilt of Savoy Cabbage

Brassica oleracea L. (Savoy Cabbage Group)

A fungal infection of the vascular system of Savoy cabbage caused by the soil-borne pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans, leading to chlorosis and wilting of plants.

The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans, which enters the plant through the root system and blocks the vascular vessels. In breeding and phytopathology, the pathogen is divided into physiological races, among which race 1 and race 2 are the most significant for the crop. The disease manifests actively during hot and dry periods, and the pathogen is capable of persisting in the soil for a long time in the form of chlamydospores.

External signs of infection include interveinal yellowing of tissues, loss of turgor, and characteristic developmental asymmetry. Internal symptoms are expressed by darkening of the vascular ring on cross-sections of the stem or petioles. When evaluating varieties, a scale from susceptible (S) to highly resistant (HR) is used, and genetic resistance is labeled as Foc:1 or Foc:1,2, with the PDF1.2 gene, which encodes defensin, playing an important role in defense mechanisms.
