Variety traits

Lettuce plant height

Lactuca sativa L.

An indicator of rosette development, measured from the root collar to the highest point of the leaves, used to assess market maturity and monitor the physiological state of the crop.

In the reference 175 varieties crop Lettuce, where this is mentioned in the description.

For lettuce, height is measured in centimeters from the soil or substrate surface to the tip of the most developed leaves at the technical maturity stage. Standard values for ready-to-market produce are considered to be in the range of 12–15 cm. Seedlings are considered ready for transplanting when they reach a height of approximately 8 cm, whereas values of 10 cm may indicate developmental delay or excessive growth.

Rosette architectonics vary significantly by type: Romaine lettuce reaches 15–20 cm, while stem lettuce (celtuce) can stretch up to 60–120 cm during the formation of the flowering stalk. Typical values for most vegetative lettuce rosettes fall within the 15–30 cm range.

Changes in height serve as an important diagnostic sign. Excessive petiole elongation indicates etiolation due to light deficiency, while a sharp increase in total height often signals that the plant is entering the bolting stage. In intensive production systems, height monitoring allows for the optimization of planting density and the determination of harvest timing.
