Poa pratensis L.

A morphological trait of Kentucky bluegrass that determines the development of generative stems, which vary in height from 30 to 100 cm. The value of this indicator depends on the intended use of the crop, determining lawn maintenance strategies or yield in forage production.

Generative stems of Kentucky bluegrass typically reach 30–100 cm, although rare forms with heights of 10–20 cm exist. Vegetative shoots that form the sod are significantly shorter than the generative stems. The indicator is measured during the mass flowering phase by recording the height to the top of the inflorescence.

In turfgrass applications, priority is given to low-growing forms, with mowing height becoming a critical parameter. To maintain a dense sward, regular mowing is practiced to prevent the development of tall stems. Kentucky bluegrass is capable of being mown as low as 12 mm, while the optimal level is approximately 4 cm.

For forage use, stem height correlates with biomass yield, making taller varieties preferable for hay production. Final plant growth is significantly influenced by moisture and nutrient availability, as well as infection by diseases such as rust or powdery mildew.
