Poa pratensis L.
A systemic disease of Kentucky bluegrass caused by the fungi Ustilago striiformis and Urocystis agropyri. It manifests as plant stunting and the formation of spore stripes on leaves, leading to the death of the stand.

In Kentucky bluegrass, smut is represented by two main pathogens: the causal agent of stripe smut, Ustilago striiformis, and the causal agent of flag smut, Urocystis agropyri. Both diseases are systemic in nature, persisting within the plant throughout its entire life cycle.
Typical symptoms include growth retardation and pronounced plant stunting. Stripes form within the leaf tissues and eventually rupture, releasing masses of brown-black teliospores. This results in chlorosis in the spring and browning of the stand in the summer, while also increasing the susceptibility of the bluegrass to drought and high temperatures.
The stripe smut pathogen is characterized by the presence of specialized physiological races adapted to infect specific cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass. In breeding practice, resistance to these fungi is a key trait, evaluated primarily through field trials, as chemical control of these systemic infections is difficult.
