Triticum durum Desf.
A fungal disease of durum wheat caused by the basidiomycetes Tilletia caries and Tilletia laevis. It manifests in the formation of bunt sori instead of grain, accompanied by a sharp odor of trimethylamine and the loss of the ear's ability to droop at the stage of full maturity.

The causal agents of common bunt, Tilletia caries and Tilletia laevis, induce pathological changes that are noticeable from the beginning of the milk stage. Infected ears are characterized by flared glumes and an intense green color with a bluish tinge. Inside the hulls, masses of black teliospores are formed; when an infected ear is crushed, it releases a liquid with the smell of herring brine.
Unlike healthy ears, which droop under the weight of the grain at the stage of full maturity, infected plants remain erect due to the lighter weight of the bunt balls. Populations of the pathogen on durum wheat exhibit high variability, including up to 13 physiological races with varying levels of virulence and aggressiveness.
The genetic resistance of the crop to the disease is controlled by specific Bt genes. In breeding programs, the introgression of effective genes, such as Bt4, Bt9, and Bt10, from wild relatives and older wheat landraces is used to increase resistance.
