Zea mays L. subsp. mays (Sweet Corn Group)
A complex of diseases including common smut and head smut, which affect the reproductive and vegetative organs of sweet corn, causing the formation of pathological outgrowths and tissue deformation.
In the reference 44 varieties crop Sweet corn, where this is mentioned in the description.
Common smut, caused by the fungus Ustilago maydis, manifests as the formation of galls on all above-ground plant parts except the roots. On young tissues, the galls have a whitish or pinkish-gray hue, and upon maturation, they turn into a blackish-olive spore mass. Infection of the ears leads to the transformation of kernels into tumor-like growths, which critically reduces the commercial quality of the product.
Head smut, caused by the fungus Sorosporium reilianum, primarily affects the reproductive organs of corn. Tassels are deformed into a black, powdery mass of spores, and instead of ears, cone-shaped knots containing teliospores are formed. The disease is accompanied by general plant stunting, which manifests as delayed growth, increased tillering, and the acquisition of deformed shapes.
Breeding sweet corn for smut resistance is based on evaluating hybrid tolerance under field conditions, as there are no specific international nomenclatures for resistance genes or pathotype classifications for this crop. Variety resistance is typically classified as complex or multi-genic and is determined based on the results of provocation trials on an infectious background.
