The variety is intended for use in lawn landscaping. It has become so significant in breeding that it gave its name to an entire group of varieties united by common traits, such as good wear tolerance and early spring awakening.

The plant is characterized by early spring regrowth and forms a dense turf. The variety possesses resistance to rust and stem smut, but is susceptible to brown leaf spot.

The characteristics of the variety Julia distinguish it into a separate category among other groups of Poa pratensis, while it serves as a standard for the classification of other varieties with similar morphological and economic traits.
