Tulip plant height

Tulipa L.

The height of a tulip is a key morphological trait, measured by the length of the flower stalk from the soil surface to the flower during the flowering period. The value varies from 10–20 cm in dwarf varieties to 70–80 cm in tall groups, such as Darwin hybrids.

During variety trials and breeding, height is determined according to UPOV guidelines on a representative sample of plants in the full flowering stage. The value of this trait directly affects the agrotechnical use of the crop: low-growing varieties are used in container gardening and borders, while tall-growing ones require protection from wind loads to prevent lodging of flower stalks, especially in double-flowered forms.

Deviation of height from the varietal standard often indicates a violation of agrotechnical practices, including incorrect planting depth, nitrogen deficiency, or insufficient light. In commercial floriculture, this indicator is a determining criterion for the market quality of cut flowers, and during greenhouse forcing, the height is adjusted by changing the duration of the cold storage period of the bulbs.
