Protected cultivation of carrots

Daucus carota L.

The use of protected cultivation for carrots is limited to temporary plastic covers or tunnels aimed at obtaining early produce and protecting seedlings from frost and pests.

In the reference 30 varieties crop Carrot, where this is mentioned in the description.

The use of protected cultivation for carrots serves specific purposes: accelerating the maturation of bunching carrots by 3–4 weeks, protecting crops from late spring frosts, and preventing the formation of a soil crust that hinders uniform seed germination. On an industrial scale, a full cultivation cycle in permanent greenhouses is excluded due to low economic efficiency; therefore, temporary plastic covers or agro-textiles are primarily used.

Technology in protected cultivation requires strict control of the topsoil moisture content during the seed germination stage. To prevent root deformation in greenhouse conditions, raised beds or boxes are used, ensuring the necessary looseness of the substrate. Furthermore, the use of covering materials and netting serves as a physical barrier against the carrot rust fly during the critical initial development period of the crop.

Unlike tomatoes or cucumbers, carrots are not mass-grown using hydroponics or rockwool. The exception is highly specialized microgreen production, where artificial substrates are used for seed germination in trays.
