In protected ground, tomatoes are grown in an extended cycle with a yield potential of up to 600 t/ha, which requires the use of hybrids with high growth vigor. The technology includes the mandatory use of bumblebees for pollination, plant pruning to a single stem, and the stem-lowering technique upon reaching the trellis.
Intensification of the photosynthesis process is ensured by maintaining CO₂ concentration at a level of 600–1000 ppm. Inert substrates, such as mineral wool and perlite, are widely used for root nutrition, while control of the pH and EC of the nutrient solution is critically important for tomatoes due to their specific sensitivity to phosphorus uptake during temperature fluctuations.
