Winter protection of roses

An agrotechnical method for protecting roses from frost and excessive moisture, which is critical for most modern garden groups that do not have time to ripen before winter.

For the majority of modern garden rose groups, the optimal method is air-dry covering. It involves creating a frame that provides an air gap around the shoots, preventing their contact with moisture, condensation, and thaws, which minimizes the risks of damping-off and the development of fungal infections.

The necessity for protection depends on genetic characteristics: while species and old garden roses are often frost-resistant down to –30 °C, modern hybrid tea roses, floribundas, and shrubs require mandatory protection due to their long vegetative period.

The work is carried out after stable sub-zero temperatures around –5…–7 °C are established; premature covering in warm weather triggers continued growth and subsequent plant death. Preparation includes sanitary pruning of unripened shoots and the removal of leaves to induce plant dormancy.

When hilling, it is important to use breathable mixtures instead of moisture-retaining peat. The structure of the cover should provide ventilation and facilitate even snow accumulation, which serves as an additional thermal insulator, while avoiding the formation of ice crusts.
