Winter protection of sage

The main feature of sage protection is that preventing crown rot takes priority over thermal insulation. It is critical to use breathable materials that prevent the stems from getting wet.

Sage is extremely sensitive to excess moisture and winter thaws, which lead to crown rot. The use of dense materials, such as plastic film or moist soil, is strictly prohibited. A dry covering method is recommended using spruce branches, dry leaves, or non-woven materials on a frame, which ensure the necessary level of aeration.

When preparing for winter, it is advisable to prune shoots to a height of 7–15 cm, as pruning completely to the soil level increases the risk of freezing. The protection strategy varies depending on the species: Salvia nemorosa is sufficiently winter-hardy and can overwinter without cover under stable snow cover, whereas Salvia officinalis requires mandatory protection or relocation to a cool room when grown in containers.
