The use of sage as a border is based on selecting compact varieties and maintaining planting density to form a continuous row that retains its decorative value for up to 8 years.

To form borders, genetically dwarf varieties such as the Reddy series, or compact species with a bush height of 30 to 40 cm are chosen. The plant spacing in the line is 25–30 cm, which ensures the closure of the bushes. In border plantings, sage is valued for the vertical structure of its inflorescences and high drought tolerance, making the crop optimal for open, sunny sites.

The agronomy of border sage includes mandatory pruning of woody shoots after flowering to maintain shape and stimulate growth. To prevent waterlogging of the root system on heavy soils, drainage materials such as sand or gravel are added to the planting trench. To control root system spread and prevent unwanted self-seeding, a border edging tape is sometimes installed along the perimeter of the line.
