The plant reaches a height of 80 to 120 cm, forming bushy, upright, or slightly spreading shapes. The stems are sturdy, often with a reddish-bronze hue; the foliage is dark green with a citrus scent. The tubular purple-crimson flowers are gathered in large spicate inflorescences.
Flowering continues from late spring until the first frosts. The variety is a heat-loving perennial (USDA zone 9–11), does not produce seeds, and is propagated vegetatively. The crop can be susceptible to powdery mildew, leaf spot, and rust.
The plant is intended for landscaping borders, flower beds, and container gardening, and also serves as a honey plant that attracts pollinators. Cut flowers remain fresh in water for several days.
