The plant forms a compact, dense, upright bush 50–60 cm tall. The leaves are dark green, wrinkled, coarsely toothed, broad-lanceolate in shape, and gathered into a basal rosette. The inflorescences are strong vertical stems with numerous deep violet-blue flowers.

Flowering begins in late May and lasts about three weeks; with timely pruning of the flower stalks, a second wave is possible in mid-summer. The variety possesses high winter hardiness (USDA zone 3), is resistant to drought and heat, as well as damage by deer and rabbits. It prefers full sun and well-drained, moderately dry soils; it does not tolerate waterlogging. In excessively fertile soils, the stems may lose strength.
