The plant is a deciduous perennial with oval, serrated, wrinkled leaves of a light grey-green shade, possessing a characteristic aroma. The flowers are gathered in large, dense, spike-like racemes that change color from dark violet-crimson to a softer pink as they fade.
Flowering usually continues from June to August. The variety is winter-hardy (USDA zones 4–8), prefers sunny locations and well-drained soils. The plant is characterized by drought tolerance, is sensitive to stagnant moisture, is used in landscape gardening, and attracts bees and butterflies.
