The variety forms a narrow fastigiate crown with a distinct central leader and shortened upward-pointing branches. An adult plant typically has a height of 2 to 4 meters with a width of about 1 meter. Annual growth is approximately 25 cm.
A distinctive feature is the strongly wavy leaves, which curl and resemble an inflated sail. The young foliage is bright green and shiny, becoming matte with age. Autumn coloration varies from brownish to golden-yellow under favorable conditions.
The plant is winter hardy (USDA zone 4, down to –34...–35 °C) and shade-tolerant, although it prefers sunny locations. It requires moderately moist and fertile soils and does not tolerate drought well. Propagated primarily by grafting onto Acer platanoides rootstock.
