The plant is a perennial rhizomatous grass reaching a height of 40–120 cm. It is characterized by flat, dull green leaves with a long, blunt, serrated ligule. The inflorescence is a spreading pyramidal panicle 5–25 cm long, with spikelet coloration ranging from green to reddish-purple.
The root system is strong; stolons are not formed. The species is characterized by high adaptability, grows well on moist, acidic, and infertile soils, and possesses good winter hardiness. The plant is sensitive to severe drought but is able to tolerate temporary waterlogging.
It is used as a pasture and hay crop, as well as for land reclamation and slope stabilization. It is suitable for hay and silage production, although it may be inferior to other grasses in attractiveness to cattle.
