The Råneälvdalen variety is a traditional crop collected in the northern part of Sweden during nationwide studies on the conservation of crop plant diversity. Genetically, it is identical to some Danish clones of the Aggregatum group of onions.

The plant is maintained as a vegetatively propagated clone and has traditionally been used in home gardens in Fennoscandia. Currently, the variety is represented in the National Gene Bank under the number NGB 17782.
