The Cardinal variety is a winter type of onion. Plants reach a height of approximately 28.7 cm (11.3 inches). The shape of the bulbs is characterized as a flattened globe, and the skin color is deep red or purple.

The variety possesses genetic resistance to Fusarium wilt (basal rot) and has a low tendency to bolt. This variety is intended for cultivation in conditions that allow for overwintering in open field.
