The variety represents an heirloom type of red salad onion, developed in the 1870s. The plant forms upright bushes 30–40 cm in height. The bulbs are flat-round in shape, covered with dry scales of a rich dark-red color; the succulent scales are colored in a white-pink shade, sometimes with reddish veins.
The weight of one bulb varies from 80 to 180 g depending on growing conditions. The vegetation period is from 90 to 135 days. The taste of the fruit is described as piquant, sweet-sharp, or spicy. The variety shows resistance to diseases and is suitable both for fresh consumption and for long-term storage.
Cultivation is possible both by direct sowing in the open field and by seedlings. The seedling method is preferable for obtaining larger bulbs.
