The Eclipse variety, sometimes referred to as L303, was developed by crossing the Crystal Wax and Excel varieties. The bulbs are round or flattened in shape with white dry scales; the flesh is characterized by a crisp texture and mild taste.
The plant reaches a height of 23–45 cm, and the ripening period is 80–110 days. The variety shows resistance to bolting, splitting, and pink root rot. The produce is suitable for fresh consumption and cooking, but has a short shelf life.
The variety is recommended for cultivation under short-day conditions. Depending on the latitude, it is used both for obtaining full-sized bulbs and for growing small onions of the pearl or cipollini type.
