The population is formed on the basis of ten varieties selected during the testing of twenty different types of Welsh onion for their ability to overwinter in the climatic conditions of the Czech Republic. The plants were grown in close proximity to ensure cross-pollination.
A high degree of trait variability is observed within the population. The plants differ in the length and thickness of the leaves, as well as in the intensity of their pungency. The main characteristic of this group is high winter hardiness.
