The variety is an heirloom Danish leek, which may be encountered under the botanical names Allium ampeloprasum or Allium porrum. It is used for autumn and post-winter harvesting.
The plant forms quite broad, dark green leaves and a relatively long pseudo-stem. In mild winter conditions, the variety is capable of overwintering in open field.
There are various breeding lines of this variety, such as Imperial and Konta. In literature, the variety American Flag is sometimes mentioned as a synonym or similar in characteristics to Københavns Torve.
