The shrub forms a compact spherical crown, reaching a height of about 1 meter. The main distinctive feature is the wide, shiny, leathery leaves of dark purple or cherry-black color. The plant is often classified as semi-evergreen: in mild climates the foliage remains longer, while in harsh conditions it falls off.
Flowering occurs in late spring, in May or June, with small yellow or yellow-red flowers collected in raceme-like inflorescences. The variety withstands frosts down to -25 °C and is adapted to various soil types. Due to its structure and ornamental qualities, it is used for creating hedges and borders.
