The plant has a very short stem and forms a wide, prostrate rosette of large, dark green, finely blistered leaves. The head is characterized as dense and flattened. Both the heads and the outer leaves are consumed, with the flavor improving after exposure to frost.
The variety belongs to traditional heirloom types and is often referred to by the synonyms Chou Milan nain, Chou Marcellin, or Chou Milan de Caen. The crop was intended for winter consumption: sowing was carried out in summer, after which the plants remained in the beds and were harvested during the cold season.
