Tarahumara represents a wild or semi-wild population of chiltepin distributed in the Sierra Madre region. The plant is a perennial shrub capable of reaching 1–2 meters in height. It is characterized by high hardiness and is adapted to growing on arid stony soils.
The fruits are small, berry-like in shape; during the ripening process, they change color from green to bright red. The seeds germinate slowly, usually within 3–6 weeks at a temperature of 28–30 °C. The flavor is described as fresh, with a distinct "wild" note and rapid, sharp pungency.
The fruits are traditionally used in Mexican cuisine in dried or pickled form as a spice. The plant has also historically been used in folk medicine to alleviate symptoms of colds, bronchitis, and headaches.
