The plant forms dense, well-branched clumps 20 to 60 cm in height. The lanceolate leaves have a grey-green hue and soft pubescence. The flower heads are large, with a distinct "shaggy" form and an intense amethyst color.
Flowering continues from late spring to mid- or late summer; repeat flowering is possible if withered inflorescences are removed. The variety is winter-hardy, drought-tolerant, resistant to damage by some types of animals, and is considered practically sterile compared to species forms.
