The variety is a curly endive (Cichorium endivia var. crispum), although in some classifications it is assigned to the escarole group. The plant forms a rather large rosette of green leaves.
This is a hardy and cold-tolerant variety intended for late plantings in the open field. The harvest can be collected during the autumn and winter periods, up until the onset of persistent frosts.
Under conditions of excessive moisture, the plant can be susceptible to rots and fungal diseases, such as powdery mildew. The leaves require protection from direct sunlight to reduce bitterness, and young plants are susceptible to slug attacks.
