The variety is a local traditional population grown in the Goriška region for over 150 years. The plant is not a product of modern breeding and has evolved as a result of long-term selection. In the professional field, it is classified as red leaf chicory, rather than typical witloof for forcing in the dark.

The plant possesses high resistance to adverse weather conditions, including summer drought and winter cold. During development, it forms a leaf rosette with a characteristic reddish color by the end of the season. The produce has a bitter taste and a unique appearance resembling a rose flower.
