The Vesuvio variety is registered in international vegetable variety catalogs as a type of chicory (Cichorium intybus L.). In a number of documents, it is mentioned as a variety of Italian selection and is sometimes found under the synonym S. Marzano Vesuvio.

The name Vesuvio is also used to designate varieties of other crops, in particular beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), which requires careful identification. Specific agronomic characteristics of this historical chicory variety are represented to a limited extent in modern reference books.
