The plant is a small tree or spreading shrub 1.8–4 meters tall with thorny branches. The leaves are oval or elliptical, small, and light green in hue. The flowers are small, white, sometimes with a purple tint to the buds, and have a distinct aroma.
The fruits are 2–5 cm in size, round in shape, have a thin peel, and contain many seeds. During the ripening process, they remain green, although they may turn yellow in case of temperature fluctuations. The fruit pulp is very juicy and characterized by an intense aroma and a high level of acidity.
The plant is heat-loving and sensitive to frost. Flowering and fruiting can occur throughout the year. The crop has high susceptibility to bacterial infections, in particular to citrus greening disease (Huanglongbing).
