The plant is a small tree or large shrub 1.5 to 5 meters tall with a dense crown and short thorns. The leaves are dark green, and the fruits are oval-shaped with a diameter of 3.5–6 cm. Upon ripening, the peel may turn yellow, but for commercial purposes, the fruits are harvested green.
Flowering is remontant, which ensures the possibility of harvesting over a long period. The crop is extremely thermophilic, dies at temperatures around -4 °C, requires good drainage, and is light-demanding. It is grown in the tropics as an industrial crop, and in temperate climates as an ornamental potted plant.
