The plant is a shrub or small tree 4–8 m in height. It is characterized by the presence of large thorns 1–5 cm long and specific trifoliate leaves. Unlike most citrus, it is deciduous.

Fruits are spherical, 3–6 cm in diameter, yellow-orange in color, and covered with velvety fuzz. Fresh fruits are considered inedible due to their bitter-sour taste and can be used for industrial processing.

The species possesses high frost hardiness, withstanding temperature drops down to –18...–20°C (in some cases down to –25°C). It is resistant to fungal diseases of citrus, including tristeza and xyloporosis. Flowering occurs in spring, and fruits ripen in autumn.
