This form is not a variety in the generally accepted pomological sense, but represents a clonal line of the trifoliate orange. The name Arancio trifogliato translates from Italian as Poncirus trifoliata, and Serra indicates a specific breeding selection.

The plant belongs to deciduous species, possesses trifoliate leaves and sharp thorns. In commercial orchards, the rootstock is used to evaluate compatibility with scions, resistance to pests, including the nematode Tylenchulus semipenetrans, and response to environmental conditions.

In scientific literature, the form is considered alongside other known rootstocks, such as Rubidoux and Flying Dragon. The plant's fruits are not considered commercial produce due to the pronounced acidity and bitterness characteristic of the species as a whole.
