The variety is of African origin and was selected within the framework of a typing program for chufa varieties grown in the Valencia region. The tubers of this variety are distinguished by their large size and significant unit weight, having an oval-elongated shape. Compared to other studied varieties, «Gegant Africana» forms a smaller number of plants and tubers from a single initial tuber.

The plant is characterized by high inflorescence productivity with a great length of rays and bracts. The variety is intended for use in the food industry, in particular for the production of 'horchata' beverage, as well as for consumption in fresh or processed form as a source of starch, fiber, or vegetable oil.
