The variety was created based on collections of autotetraploid natural populations of Dactylis glomerata collected in France and other countries. It is part of a breeding program to improve forage quality, haymaking, and pasture use of the crop.
The variety is mentioned in scientific publications devoted to the study of pollen biology and the assessment of palatability for animals, and it served as the basis for a number of subsequent commercial cocksfoot varieties.
