The variety is classified as Chewings fescue (Festuca rubra subsp. commutata or Festuca nigrescens). It was used in breeding programs for the evaluation of turfgrasses in the mid-20th century.

The plant possesses high turf density characteristic of the Chewings fescue group. The winter hardiness of the variety was rated as medium: higher than a number of standard varieties of that time, but lower than the indicators of the most hardy representatives of the species.
