The variety was obtained by crossing the Dixieland and Temple varieties. It was created as a commercially significant variety for use in industrial and amateur plantings.

The literature also mentions the Early Midway variety, which may be a mutation of the main variety. Midway is historically included in the lists of cultivars resistant to red stele root rot.
